What is hepatitis B virus?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused by HBV. It is transmitted mainly through contact with contaminated blood or body fluids, including unprotected sex, blood transfusions or mother-to-child transmission. This disease can occur in an acute form, with visible symptoms, or silently evolve into a chronic form, leading to serious complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.

In its acute phase, hepatitis B often manifests itself as intense fatigue, localised abdominal pain in the liver, loss of appetite, nausea, moderate fever and sometimes jaundice, characterized by yellow skin and eye colouration. The urine can become darker and the stool lighter. When infection becomes chronic, symptoms may be discrete or absent, but the liver continues to suffer progressive damage, often irreversible without proper management.
